Artists and animators Philip J. Lockerby and Zartosht Soltani have worked on various animated projects together over the past four years, but the work they take the most pride in is their sketchbook and napkin drawings from the dimly lit bars they frequent after work. “For this show we’re focusing on the bartenders,” Lockerby explains. “But generally we’ll draw whomever is at the bar.  Maybe we’ll get a free drink or two out of this as well.” The subjects featured tend bar at a selection of Carroll Gardens and Park Slope haunts, including Sample, Zombie Hut, Boat, The Bell House, Canal Bar, Great Lakes, The Gate, and many more. Usually, Lockerby and Soltani will ink a portrait and then gift it to their subject. “When we give a bar napkin portrait away, most times we’ve made that person’s evening,” Lockerby says. “We’re just trying to spread the love around, doing what we love to do the most, which is to draw.”

About the Artists: After a decade animating for television and film, most notably the Academy Award-nominated Triplettes of Belleville, Philip J. Lockerby is currently directing an animated sequence for an upcoming documentary on the Manic Street Preachers.  He is also working on a personal short film.  See his work at: www.drawingonnapkins.blogspot.com.

In 1999 Zartosht Soltani graduated from the Fine Arts at Azad University of Arts at Tehran. One year later he moved to New York, where he is now working as a freelance art director and illustrator for the animation studio, FlickerLab, creating cartoons, television commercials, and broadcast design. He has exhibited paintings in Tehran, and will be a part of the upcoming Too Art for TV show in September.

I have never, not had a great time here. The food is very well priced and nice quality and their wine list is amazing. I believe that they currently have 30+ wines by the glass. I would say the only ‘not so good thing’ is, that I do not own a restaurant over the street, so I can catch the overflow from when it get’s packed out :) . Always best to call ahead of time.

Bar Tano - Gowanus, Brooklyn

Owners Peter Sclafani and Kristen Hallett opened Bar Tano back in February 2008, just before the shit hit the fan with the economy.  On top of the timing, they also opened in an area that was, and still is a bit of a dump (although it’s improving).

Stuck between the Park Slope toff’s, and the now industrial wastelands of Gowanus on 3rd. It took some guts to make a move over there. I am pleased things seem to be going great for them.

ThisBarSucks.com just got word that the girls from Newcastle Brown Ale are heading into town. They will be showing up at Draft Barn this Thursday, for about an hour. The Draft Barn is located at 530 3rd Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11215. Telephone (718) 768-0515 for more information.

Some Wiki Info about Newcastle Brown Ale

Newcastle Brown Ale is a brand of beer was originally brewed in Newcastle upon Tyne, United Kingdom, in April 1927 by Newcastle Breweries, which became Scottish & Newcastle in 1960. S&N UK is now a division of Heineken International.

In August 2005, Scottish and Newcastle closed the Tyne Brewery, the last consignment of Brown Ale having been brewed in April of that year. Production was moved across the river to the former Federation Brewery in Gateshead, UK.

Newcastle Brown Ale had originally been granted Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) status by the EU. Since Scottish and Newcastle moved production outside of the city its PGI has been removed.

In Newcastle, the beer is often called ‘Dog’ (or simply ‘Broon’). The ‘Dog’ name comes from the euphemism “I’m going to walk the dog” – meaning “I’m going to the pub” – and was further popularised by a 1980s advertising campaign. It is often referred to as Newcy Brown by those not from Newcastle, though never by those actually from the city itself.

This bar is a breath of fresh air. It has space to move about (large oak beer tables towards the back (5 of them) good music on the sound system. 5 flat screen TV’s, currently 14 beers on tap and around 300 different bottles to choose from.

The staff are European and very friendly. There are so many beers to choose from, I frequently have to ask, what they would suggest. They know their beers, and they always please with their recommendation of beer. The menu is great. I would highly recommend their calamari, breaded shrimp or their sausage platter. I have heard on the grape vine that they are planning on bringing a vegetarian section to their menu.

I surprised my wife with a birthday meet here in December. I invited a bunch of surprise guests from Manhattan and Queens, they all loved the place (it may have had something to do with the $20 shots of beer I was buying them….lol seriously though, beer ranges from the regular priced $5/$6 beer up to the premium $10 and then their is the Sam Adams Utopias at $20 a shot and $400 a bottle… If I had never tried it, and read this review, I would have choked, but this is one serious beer. At 27% and a taste of Port/Sherry with a beer aftertaste, if only the once, you have to try it http://www.ttstone.com…

This bar has a great mix of chill out and cool, without being pretentious, something that this Park Slope / Gowanus area needs.. I hope this review helps..

UPDATE… The Barn opens at noon during the week, although you may not always tell, as there isn’t any signage saying so. nice quiet place to chill with a beer, white sausage and a book.

In the shadow of the famous and brooding Kentile Floors sign in the burgeoning and classic neighborhood of Gowanus, The Bell House, a gorgeous new and unique music venue and lounge, opened its doors on September 18, 2008. The Bell House is a magnificent two-room music and events venue located at 149 7th Street between 2nd & 3rd Avenues. It was crafted out of an old 1920′s warehouse once used as a printing press, but more recently used as a fly-by-night shipping company.

BH main space

Conceived and created by the friends behind Union Hall (Park Slope) and Floyd (Brooklyn Heights), The Bell House are thrilled to be pioneers of sorts adding a prominent performance space to Brownstone Brooklyn. The main space boasts 25 foot wooden arched ceilings, a 450 square foot stage, and unobstructed views from any part of the room. “Brownstone Brooklyn needed a major music venue and event space, and we found a beautiful old building near the Gowanus that was seemingly designed for live music,” said co-owner, Jim Carden. “We’ll be able to graduate the bands we’ve championed at Union Hall to a space like no other in New York City and be able to host acts that were simply too big for the stage there,” adds co-owner and talent buyer Jack McFadden.

The storefront features a comfortable 150 capacity lounge which will be open seven nights a week as a friendly neighborhood bar and gathering space featuring beer from independent and local breweries.

The live sound in the performance space has been outfitted with flying EAW speakers, 5 monitor mixes, an Allen & Heath console, and a gorgeous lighting set up with a Hog 500 controller. Capacity for the main space is 350 with an option of having seating for 200 plus standing room only on special occasions. Musicians and audience will be thrilled to find the same charm, hospitality, and professionalism that Union Hall has brought to Park Slope for the past 2 years.
